MedlinePlus.

A practical guide to finding understandable health, medicine and test information through the National Library of Medicine.

A starting point for unfamiliar health terms

MedlinePlus is a public health information resource from the National Library of Medicine. Its collections include health topics, medicines and supplements, medical tests and genetics. When a word from a visit or report is unfamiliar, search for that term and check that the page describes the subject you intended to research. Spanish-language information is also available.

Choose the right collection

  • Use health topics for an overview of a condition or concern.
  • Use medicine information to prepare questions about a drug’s purpose or instructions.
  • Use medical test explanations to understand the vocabulary before discussing a result.

Read with your own question in mind

A general explanation does not interpret your personal test result or replace instructions from your care team. Keep the medicine name, test name or page title with your notes, and write down exactly what you want clarified. Bring the original report or medication list when relevant. Our primary care and chronic condition guides offer ways to keep these questions organized over time.
